SUMMARY:Shetland Lace Scarf
DESCRIPTION:Fall of 2016 I visited the Shetland Islands in Scotland because of their historic knitting tradition. I knew they had invented Fair Isle knitting there and their yarn is well known (remember those Shetland wool sweaters with the grossgrain ribbon button bands in the 1960s?) But I had no idea how deep their lace knitting history went. Women were so adept at it that they would attach one needle to a device around their waist and knit lace making. It freed their right hand to tend children and livestock. Amazing! Their whisper weight yarn is so fine that it is said a large shawl could be pulled through a wedding ring. Queen Victoria had stockings made of this lace. It was hot stuff in her day! But enough history! Would you like to have a taste of it? I brought enough of their yarn for exactly six scarves which we will use in this class and choose their simplest pattern (which isn’t) for the class. The pattern is written in chart form but you need no experience with charts\, you will learn this in class.

SUMMARY:Fly Casting for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:For those with no or little fly casting experience. We cover rods\, lines\, leaders\, and start with the 4-part forward cast. Later we discuss presentations\, the wind and common casting faults. We do the roll cast\, followed by shooting line and casting for accuracy in spite of the wind. A discussion of various options of equipment and fly selections will follow. For those that need practice with knots or leader systems\, that is included. Some equipment is available for loan. GLASSES AND HATS ARE REQUIRED. We meet at the small pond East of McCormicks Grill at the Golf Center.

DESCRIPTION:We will be painting and batiking a wonderful flamingo! There are no prerequisites to this class. The process will involve masking out areas with melted wax and painting other areas with watercolor paints. I will demonstrate each step of the process along the way allowing time for students to accomplish them before moving on to the next step. It is helpful to have had some experience with watercolors\, but not necessary. It is a fun project with surprising results.

SUMMARY:Painting Landscapes in an Impressionist Style
DESCRIPTION:In this course on painting landscapes we will study the impressionist style of Claude Monet and the other Impressionists to learn how to use lively brushwork and bright colors to create sun-splashed landscapes. We will use both acrylic and oil on canvas or canvas boards. Students may use either acrylic or oil or a combination of both. In either medium they should bring to class pigments of the three primary colors plus colors important to landscapes such as green (sap green is the best)\, yellow ochre\, naples yellow\, cerulean and ultramarine blue\, burnt sienna and burnt umber\, a bright red such as cadmium\, and plenty of white. In addition students will need several brushes specifically for oil and acrylic (not watercolor brushes) plus several canvases or canvas board in small to medium sizes such as 9″ x 12″\, 12″ x 16″\, and 16″ x 20″. Students will also need a palette for their pigments. The class will cover basics such as color and color combinations and the importance of layering pigments to create depth. By the end of the class in February students should have one or two finished paintings appropriate for framing.

SUMMARY:Jekyll Island Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Our Writers Workshop returns with some exciting changes for 2018. Our class time will now be two hours in length with the first hour devoted to creating new poems\, memoirs\, or fiction\, and the second hour focused on critique. Participants will distribute their works-in-progress prior to their scheduled critique time in order to receive thoughtful and supportive feedback from their fellow writers. Our goal is positive productivity.
